The New York Social Studies Supervisory Association was organized in 1973 to function autonomously within the framework of the New York State Council for the Social Studies. It was formed through the efforts of a group of NYSCSS leaders, a group that included some NYSCSS officers.

Membership then, as now was open to those NYSCSS members with “responsibilities for social studies curriculum and instructional programs.” The formation of a separate leadership organization for social studies reflects a pattern found in many of the New York State subject area professional associations.

The New York State Social Studies Supervisory Association Constitution mandates a strong continuing liaison with NYSCSS in order to maintain communication. Over the years the two social studies organizations have worked together toward their shared goals for social studies education in New York. The effect has been to double the voice and visibility of social studies educators in the State. The common objectives, but different perspectives of the two organizations have proven to be particularly effective in promoting social studies.

Goals

The New York State Social Studies Supervisory Association has worked tirelessly to achieve the particular goals of the organization. According the Constitution, it is the purpose of the NYS4A to:

Promote the status of social studies through the assurance of a quality social studies program of study at every level, pre-kindergarten through grade twelve and continuing education.
Open and maintain regular channels of communication among social studies leaders in New York State.
Articulate the voice of its membership in their relationship with the New York State Council for the Social Studies, New York State Education Department and all other related organizations.
Insure quality leadership in social studies education in every school district in New York State.
