New York State Council for the Social Studies (NYSCSS)
NYSCSS is proud of its accomplishments and its strong working relationship with the
State Education Department. Because of this, NYSCSS has been able to participate in:
- development of the New York State Standards
- creation of the Core Curriculum and state assessments at all levels
- Social Studies Summits and frequent direct dialogue with state education officials
Unlike many other states where federal "No Child Left Behind" legislation has led to elimination of social studies programs, New York has seen an expansion over the last ten years, in large part due to the very active advocacy for the discipline by NYSCSS.
By joining NYSCSS you will gain the following:
- Subscription to Time and Place, the NYSCSS newsletter filled with information, articles and lesson ideas
- Subscription to The Social Science Docket, an academic journal published by NYSCSS and NJCSS (New Jersey State Council) on relevant themes in social studies
- Information on the annual convention
- Information on workshops, seminars and summer institutes
- Updates from the State Education Department
- Opportunities to network with other professionals in the field
New York State Social Studies Supervisory Association
Membership in NYS4A is open to members of NYSCSS (for an additional $15) who have
leadership responsibilities for social studies curriculum development and instructional programs, pre-kindergarten through grade twelve and continuing education.
These leaders may include, but are not limited to principals, chairpersons, curriculum coordinators, professional consultants, department heads, directors and other educational administrators.
